The builders' measuring implement

In the Middle Ages, cathedrals' builders used a measuring implement composed of five articulated stems. Each stem corresponded to a unit of measurement of the period: the inside of the hand, the palm, the span, the foot, and the cubit. The lenghths were given in lignes.
One ligne was equal to approximately 2.247 mm, corresponding to the diameter of a barley grain.
