Alcoholism (2)

The blood alcohol level A of a person is the quantity of pur alcohol, in grammes,
contained in one litre of blood.
The unit is g.L-1. Without any other alcohol absorption, it usually decreases by 0.15 g.L-1 per hour.
In France : if 0.5 < A < 0.8 the driver is in breach of the law and if A > 0.8 he commits an offence.

Calculation of the maximal blood
alcohol level Amax
after the absorption of an alcoholic drink.

The individual absorbs an alcoholic drink
on an empty stomach.
His maximal blood alcohol level
is reached half an hour after absorption.

m is the mass of pure alcohol absorbed in g
P is the mass of the person in kg
S is the adiposity of the person
usually for a man S = 0.7 L/kg
            for a woman S = 0.6 L/kg

The individual absorbs an alcoholic drink
during a meal.
His maximal blood alcohol level
is reached 45 minutes after absorption.

1L of alcohol weighs 0.8 kg                 m =   g
Amax = g.L-1
round to the nearest hundredth
blood alcohol level to lose = Amax - 0,5 = g.L-1
round to the nearest hundredth
necessary time from the absorption on to have
the blood alcohol level authorized again
h
give a decimal number rounded to the nearest hundredth
answer = h min
