Babylonian notation (1800 BC)

Each number is made up of multiples of 1, 60 and 60 x 60 (=3600).

The only symbols used were for 1 and et for 10.

For example 3874 = 1 x (60 x 60) + 4 x 60 + 34

So, 3874 was written as

In reality, the symbols were rarely grouped, which often led to confusion -apart from where the meaning was clear from the context.
